Description
Great Western Railway driver of a Castle class 4-6-0 locomotive number 5085 Evesham Abbey, wearing a gas mask. At the start of the Second World War, gas attacks were feared so gas masks like these were issued to the public. Railway workers, whose work put them at greater risk, were also issued with steel helmets.
